What to expect from your inspection
Failing a road check can result in your vehicle or driver becoming out-of-service- avoid this potential problem by knowing what to expect on the upcoming inspections. Be sure to perform a thorough self-inspection, in addition to your usual checks, to ensure everything is in order. Download the cheat sheet below and check out the CVSA site for additional information. The 2021 focus will be on Hours of Service and Lighting.
The vehicle inspection includes checking critical inspection items
Most inspections performed are Level 1 Inspections of both the vehicle and driver. Specifically, these include:
- brake systems
- cargo securement
- lighting devices (headlamps, tail lamps, stop lamps, turn signals and lamps/flags on projecting loads)
- steering mechanisms
- suspensions
- tires, wheels, rims and hubs
- coupling devices
- driveline/driveshaft
- exhaust systems
- frames
- fuel systems
- windshield wipers

Additionally, drivers may need to readily provide documentation
Likewise, aside from the truck itself, the driver must have all their paperwork in order. Regularly required items:
- Drivers License/CDL
- Medical Examiners Certificate
- Record of Duty Status
- Daily Vehicle Inspection Report
- Periodic Inspection Reports
- Shipping Papers
- Vehicle Inspection Certificate
- Skill Performance Evaluation Certificate
- Inspectors will also check drivers for seat belt usage, sickness, fatigue and apparent alcohol and/or drug impairment
12.6% of ALL vehicles inspected in the US were cited for Cargo Securement!
Take a look at the 2020 results.
If you pass the inspection you will receive a CVSA decal to display. Congratulations!
Otherwise, if one or more critical violations were found, your vehicle may be placed out-of-service and won’t be allowed to operate until violations are corrected.
